Most motorcycle oils provide little or no rust and corrosion protection for the inside of an engine during storage. AMSOIL's base stocks: Polyalphaolefins (PAO)
 are likely to be the closest relative to mineral oil stocks of all the synthetic base materials. This is because they are both comprised of similar hydrocarbon molecules. The difference is that the Polyalphaolefin stocks consist of a single molecular structure whereas the mineral oil contains a broad range of structures. Polyalphaolefins are also known as synthesized hydrocarbons, but are most frequently referred to as PAO’s. Basically, PAO’s are commonly manufactured by reacting ethylene gas with a metallic catalyst. The major advantage of PAO’s used in AMSOIL synthetic motor oils is their ability to function over a broader temperature range than their mineral-based counterparts. And due to increased aerodynamics of today's cars, engine temperatures have increased throughout the past 15 years which adds to the catastrophic degradation of various systems. Of all the available base stocks, polyalphaolefins offer the best hydrolytic stability which is why we offer value based blends for equipment which are exposed to humid and corrosive conditions or do not run frequently such as motorcycles, marine equipment and farming machinery.
AMSOIL had a tremendous year in 2004. Synthetic demands from both the automotive and industrial sides kept production beyond 90% and meant double digit growth in raw material purchases.
The main increase of PAO sales and market awareness was due to the surge in fuel costs and a 44% jump in mid and heavy-duty truck sales. Outside of fleet maintenance, Eaton, Dana and other drivetrain manufacturers now use PAO based synthetics as factory fill on just about every differential axle unit and transmission they sell for class 8 vehicles. Many of my customers wished they started using AMSOIL 20 years ago.
Using PAO's allows truck manufacturers to offer robust factory warranties and when PAO synthetics are used in maintenance including AMSOIL, some of the warranties are extended beyond 500,000 miles of service.
